Partner at Humphries Kirk continues role as Under Sheriff of Dorset

Katharine Jones, partner at leading law firm Humphries Kirk, has been the Under Sheriff of Dorset for seven years – a role she is immensely proud of.

On Tuesday April 3, a special ceremony was held at John O’Gaunt’s Kitchen, Canford School in Wimborne, to appoint the new High Sheriff of Dorset, Mrs Jacqueline Swift DL. The historical service, known as ‘The High Sheriff’s Declaration’ announces the nominated High Sheriff of Dorset for the year ahead.

As Under Sheriff, Katharine is responsible for supporting the High Sheriff, to include acting as legal advisor to the High Sheriff, whose office is an independent, non-political royal appointment for a single year.

The Under Sheriff is appointed by the High Sheriff annually and helps with the co-ordination and organisation of certain ‘set piece’ events during the year, such as the installation of the High Sheriff, the High Sheriff’s legal service and the High Sheriff’s annual garden party.

The appointing of a High Sheriff dates back to Saxon times when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the King for the maintenance of law and order and for the collection and return of taxes due to the Crown. Today the role is purely ceremonial; High Sheriffs continue to support the Crown and the Judiciary as well as actively lending support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency service, and the voluntary sector.

Katharine Jones, Under Sheriff of Dorset and partner at Humphries Kirk, commented: “I’m proud of my long-standing Shrievalty association and delighted to be appointed as Under Sheriff for the seventh year in a row.”

Humphries Kirk has offices in Poole, Bournemouth, Parkstone, Swanage, Wareham, Dorchester and Crewkerne and has an international network of lawyers. Visit for more information.
