The History of HK

We’ve certainly been on a journey of growth over the years.

Our heritage traces back over 300 years!

1930’s

Where we started

Harry Kirk, Christopher Humphries, and John Miller formed a firm of Solicitors in Wareham Dorset, starting with just 1 office and 10 members of staff.

1930’s

1950’s

Take over of Slade & West

Humphries Kirk and Miller moved into Swanage with the take over of Slade & West, solicitors, taking the business up to 2 offices and 25 people.

1950’s

1970’s

New offices in Wool and Upton

An office was opened in Wool followed by another in Upton.

1970’s

1980’s

Acquired Porter, Magnall & Coggins

Humphries Kirk and Miller, now renamed Humphries Kirk, continued to grow, acquiring Porter, Mangnall & Coggins, solicitors, of 40 High West Street in Dorchester – a building it continues to occupy to this day!

The firm also opens a London office.

1980’s

1990’s

Expanding into Dorchester and Bournemouth

The Dorchester office further expanded with the acquisition of the firms of D.W. Edwards, Richard Dukes and Co and Williamson and Co.

Humphries Kirk moved into the Bournemouth area, taking over the firm of Oscar H Whittingham in Southbourne.

1990’s

2000’s

Moved into Poole & Parkstone

Parkstone was the next location to see the arrival of Humphries Kirk as the firm merged with Trevanions, solicitors, in 2007.

Partners and staff members from these mergers are still with us today.

Looking to increase on the commercial offering of the firm, offices were opened on the Ling Road Industrial Estate in Poole.

2000’s

2010’s

Merged with Poole & Co based in Crewkerne

In 2012, Humphries Kirk merged with Poole & Co, incorporating Baker and Duke, based in Crewkerne, Somerset. According to Law Society records, Poole & Co’s long-standing pedigree was unrivalled and could trace its roots back over 300 years.

This move gave Humphries Kirk the largest regional spread of any law firm in Dorset and Somerset.

2012 also saw the merger of Humphries Kirk with another long-standing Purbeck firm, Neville Jones and Co Solicitors.

In 2015 Humphries Kirk opened an office in Grays Inn, Holborn, London which was fully staffed and served the London community. This was in addition to the office located in Temple Chambers.

2010’s

2020’s

Further expansion

2020 saw the acquisition of Catchpole Law in Cranborne Chase, Wiltshire. This is the firm’s first office in the Wiltshire area. The firm has subsequently relocated the office to a more central location in Blandford to better serve the local community.

In the same year, a further merger with Williamsons Solicitors in Crewkerne increased the firm’s presence in Somerset.

The firm now has circa 180 people in 7 locations across Dorset and Somerset and is one of the South Coast’s leading legal services firms.

Lexcel Accreditation

HK Law gains accreditation with Lexcel, the Law Society’s legal practice quality mark for client care, compliance and practice management.
